Performs specialized design computations and analysis within a given discipline.

Performs interdisciplinary reviews and provides coordination of data to ensure a compatible design.

Understands and applies commonly used company design standards and methods. May assist in the establishment or revision of guidelines and standards.

Reviews supplier data and supplier/manufacturer drawings, as required.

May provide direction to a team of checking personnel, ensuring the mathematical accuracy of the drawings produced.

Collaborates with Engineers and other engineering disciplines to ensure quality of design.

As if his very public bromance with former Formula 1 driver, Michael Schumacher, wasn’t awkward enough already, Dubai’s crown prince Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has taken it up a notch. Apparently, after Schumacher completed his final Grand Prix at Interlagos, Sheik Makotoum presented Michael Schumacher with his own $7 million dollar private island. Located off the coast of Jumeirah, Dubai, Schumi’s plot of land is located on one of the many small, private island’s situated in a cluster known as “The World”. Created by real estate group, Al Nakheel Properties, all 300 of The World’s island’s have been specifically placed to resemble a map of the world when viewed from above. As indicated the photos below, Michael Schumacher’s little home-away-from-home rests in the balmy southern hemisphere atop of “Antarctica.”
So, I guess that $50 Auto Zone gift card the local track gave you for winning the amateur division two months ago is looking pretty lame right about now, huh?

Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain

A film starring top Hollywood actors that dramatises the Bhopal gas disaster has been criticised by campaigners and participants in the tragedy for misrepresenting individuals and the facts.Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain is due for release this autumn with Mischa Barton and Martin Sheen in leading roles.Shot largely in India, it portrays the events around the world's worst industrial accident, in which clouds of toxic gas escaped from a chemical plant run by a part-owned subsidiary of American company Union Carbide.

More than 8,000 people, mainly living in slums around the plant, died immediately when the gas leaked shortly after midnight on 3 December 1984. At least 25,000 others are estimated to have died over subsequent years and many more continue to suffer today.Ravi Kumar, the writer and director, said the film was "a dramatisation, inspired by real events."There are 18- and 19-year-olds across India and across the world who have never heard of Bhopal. I could have made a four-hour documentary that no one would have seen.
"This way a whole new generation will learn about what happened and a whole series of very important and relevant questions can be discussed," said Kumar, a London-based paediatrician who has raised more than $5m from Indian private backers for the project.

Sheen plays Warren Anderson, the chief executive of Union Carbide, headquartered in Danbury, Connecticut. Barton plays Eva Gascon, a fictitious reporter from Paris-Match who learns of the problems at the plant from a local journalist but decides not to publish a story.The film ends with an imagined present-day meeting between Anderson and Gascon in the former's country club in America. The journalist is racked with remorse. Anderson is unrepentant.Earlier versions of the script, obtained by the Guardian and Bhopal campaigners, have angered many.

"There is not a single Bhopali with upright moral standards in the script. Of course the people of the city are going to be angry. They are made to look comic, corrupt or passive victims," said Satinath Sarangi, managing trustee of the Sambhavna Clinic which helps the estimated 150,000 suffering health problems due to the disaster.Raj Kumar Keswani, editor of a local newspaper in Bophal, who wrote a series of articles before the disaster outlining the danger posed by the plant, said reading the script had been "very painful".Keswani, portrayed in the film as a foul-mouthed buffoon, said: "My sincerity, integrity and commitment has been distorted and trivialised [and] other characters of Bhopal have not been treated fairly." Kumar said he tried to contact Keswani before filming but had been rebuffed. The journalist said no such attempts had been made and that he was "always accessible".

The film is also likely to reopen debate over who was responsible for the disaster. Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), now owned by Dow Chemical Company, has always claimed that its Indian subsidiary Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), 49% of which was owned by local Indian investors, was solely responsible for the operation of the plant and that the accident was the result of sabotage by an employee who has subsequently been identified.Union Carbide denies any safety issues at the plant before the leak.

Kumar, who was born in Bhopal, said that the sabotage theory had been "totally discounted". His film instead shows an ill-equipped and poorly-trained Indian workforce struggling to work with badly maintained equipment.Tim Edwards, of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, said that despite serious flaws the film's script was "not all bad."It depicts the cost-cutting regime imposed by the parent UCC on subsidiary UCIL pretty well. There is also substance to the depiction of local management culpability. Overall, [the film] does make [Union] Carbide look like white-man's-burden colonialists who put big dreams and profits before practical worker health and community safety," he said.

However, Edwards said that the film "glossed over the degree of control and responsibility of US officials" and failed to portray strenuous efforts made by representatives of the workforce to get improvements on safety, particularly after a series of accidents and the death of at least one worker at the plant in the years before the accident.Kumar said that Sheen had "sharpened" the character of Anderson, who is still alive, to make the message of the film "more black and white.

"Marty wanted him to be less ambivalent than in the original script."Now [Anderson] basically blames everything on the Indians and walks away," Kumar said.The Union Carbide plant in Bhopal was set up on an unpopulated site on the outskirts of the city in 1969 to manufacture pesticides for use in India's push to improve agricultural productivity. The city grew to envelop the plant, which started manufacturing the volatile chemical Methyl isocyanate, which forms toxic gas on contact with water, in 1979. Much of the action of the film takes place in the shantytowns which had grown up around the plant where most of the victims lived.

Hazra Bee, a resident of Bhopal whose grandchildren suffer serious birth-defects said that enough films had been made on the events leading up to the tragedy. The most important thing now was to highlight the ongoing consequences of the disaster, she said.

Alekxey Balabanov has gained wide acclaim of mass public thanks to his tough action movies about Russian mafia. Why bandits? “People have always watched and will watch films about bandits” – says the film director in his interviews. “I create films in turn: popular – unpopular… and it is not deliberately, it just happens this way.” Soon Balabanov is going to release a new (non-bandit) film, and time will show, if it is popular or not. Anyway, all of his films, whether obviously aimed at love of masses or not, are not devoid of significant ideas and powerful impact on the viewer – that is what makes Aleksei Balabanov interesting.

Alexey Balabanov was born on February 25, 1959 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg). In 1981 he graduated from Translation Faculty of Gorky Teachers’ Training University. From 1983 to 1987 Alexei worked as an assistant of a film director at Sverdlovsk film studio. Later Balabanov studied at the experimental course “Authors’ Cinema” of the High Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors, graduating in 1990.

Balabanov started his creative career in “big cinema” in 1991 with directing his first full-length feature Shchastlivyye dni (Happy Days) after his own script. In the same year he became the co-author of the script Pogranichniy Conflict (Frontier Conflict) by the young film director Nadezhda Khvorova. In 1992 Aleksei Balabanov together with producers Sergei Selyanov and Vasily Grigor'ev established the STV Film Company, which later participated in creation of almost all of his films.

In 1994 the film director released Zamok (The Castle) after the famous novel by Frantz Kafka. In the same year Balabanov debuted as a producer, with the film Ispoved neznakomtsu (Secrets Shared with a Stranger). Next year he took part in creation of the film almanac Pribytiye poyezda (The Arrival of a Train) (1995) dedicated to the 100th anniversary of cinematography; Balabanov’s segment Trofim won a number of cinema awards.

However, it was the criminal action Brat (The Brother) (1997) that became Aleksei Balabanov’s real breakthrough into the “high cinema league”. The feature starring Sergei Bodrov Jr. (1971-2002) and with the soundtrack containing songs by Vyacheslav Butusov, the frontman of rock band Nautilus Pompilius at once made a cult movie and the most smashing box office hit of the year.

After such an overwhelming success with mass audience Aleksei Balabanov made quite a sudden turn by creating the art-house film Pro urodov i lyudey (Of Freaks and Men) (1998) starring Sergei Makovetsky. The original and provocative film tells about the first pornographers in pre-revolutionary Russia.

Balabanov’s next work was Brat 2 (The Brother II) (2000). Unlike the first Brother, which can be considered a tough social drama, its sequel is rather a black comedy with an almost unfeasible plot. Soundtrack to this bright and impressive movie included music by then little known rock bands, which became famous along with the film right after its premiere. So, the second Brother also won love of the Russians: it became another Balabanov’s blockbuster, an absolute champion of the year on the film market.

Soon Alexey Balabanov again surprised everyone by starting work on the film Reka (River, or At the End of the Earth) featuring life in a Yakut village for the leprous in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, a tragedy befell the film crew – the actress of the Yakut Nastional Theatre Tuinara Svinoboeva, who played the main role, died after a car accident. The project was stopped. Yet, a year later the film director arranged the footage with the off-screen comments of the missing scenes.

In 2002 Alexey Balabanov released the feature Voyna (War) (2002) starring Sergei Bodrov Jr again. The film telling the story of people taken hostage by Chechen terrorists was shot in the mountains of North Caucasus, and in particular in Chechnya.

Balabanov’s black comedy Zhmurki (Blind Man's Bluff) (2005) brings us back to the mid 1990s: noisy and bloody bustle with shooting, biting dialogues and fights in a provincial town, and all that around a case with heroine.

The touching melodrama Mne ne bolno (It Doesn't Hurt) (2006) about three young designers and a way-out woman excels in literate composition, gradually and unhurriedly immersing the characters and viewers into a painful mystery.

In 2007 Alexey Balabanov plans to release his new film Gruz 200 (Freight 200) based on his own scenario.

Helix Hotel by Leeser Architecture At Abu Dhabi

New York design firm Leeser Architecture have won a competition to design a hotel in the Zayed Bay district of Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Called the Helix for its spiraling floors, the hotel is located in the bay and sits partially over the water.

The building includes a glass-bottomed swimming pool on the roof, visible eight floors below, and a running track on the fifth floor.

It will be part of a new waterfront development in Abu Dhabi, adjacent to the Sheik Zayed Bridge by Zaha Hadid Architects that is currently under construction.

Iconic design and state of the art technology create dynamic mini-city in the UAE
Leeser Architecture, an internationally recognized design firm, has won an invited competition for a five-star luxury hotel in the Zayed Bay in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Called the Helix Hotel for its staggered floor plates, it rests in the bay, partially floating in the water and adjacent to the serpentine Sheik Zayed Bridge currently under construction by designer Zaha Hadid. With the Helix, Leeser Architecture has devised a new way to consider hotel culture in the Emirates, highlighting elements that are usually unseen, and playfully enlivening those parts that traditionally remain static and mundane.

The commission was the result of an invited competition held by Al Qudra Real Estate in partnership with QP International, both local Abu Dhabi holdings groups with projects featured across the UAE. Zayed Bay will be a comprehensive development built along a new road, and the site will include office buildings as well as condominiums and retail along the water. The Helix is the centerpiece of this new development.

With 208 guest rooms and suites arranged around a helical floor, the hotel immediately dispenses with the idea that visitors must engage in the stale paradigms of rigid hallways and atria that characterize a typical hotel stay. The floor constantly shifts in width and pitch as it rises to the top floor, keeping public spaces always in flux. No two rooms positioned across from each other have exact views to the other side, already pulling the visitor out of the pedestrian and into the hotel’s uniquely urban world. As the helix winds upward, programmatic elements change from lounges and restaurants on the bay, to meeting rooms and conference facilities, to lounges and cafes, to the luxury indoor-outdoor health spa on the fifth floor, to, finally, the upper pool deck on the roof. The running track on the fifth floor represents the only moment when the ramping ceases and a flat surface prevails – a sleight of hand on the architect’s part, and an unexpected luxury that fit vacationers can enjoy in the cooler months.

Conceptually, the Helix Hotel participates in a critical dialogue between opulence and urbanness, between the variety of services offered by a small city and the demands of a five-star hotel guest. The floor suggests the curves a winding street would take through a bustling town, and many programmatic elements are open to views from across the central void. Though the void seems to offer unmitigated visibility, there are enclaves for private meetings and guest privacy. It is designed so that one activity feeds into the next rather than affecting sharp separations between each activity. In this way it develops a feeling of being free to whimsically experience all aspects of the hotel without having to decide on an agenda in advance.

On the luxury side of vacation culture, there are playful elements that make the hotel a designer destination in an iconic setting. From the outset, it is as much a showplace for the abundance of opulent life as it is a fully incorporated urban experience. For example, the building has a functional reverse fountain, which drops water from the ceiling down through the void to the lower lobby. At the entry, valets drive clients’ cars into the car park, which, rather than being predictably above ground or underneath the hotel, is situated instead under the bay. Cars are literally driven into the water.

As guests make their way up to their suites, remarkable views out onto the Zayed Bay become even more dramatic on the upper floors. At the top of the Helix, the rooftop pool deck features a full sized swimming pool with a glass bottom, with the water and swimmers visible from eight floors below at ground level. In the restaurant below the lobby, the bay’s waves are so near to the floor plate that they lap up onto the edge of the restaurant inside of the glass curtain wall. The wall retracts, revealing a sweeping breeze.

While focusing on unique design, Leeser Architecture is also committed to sound sustainability practices and worked with consultant Atelier Ten to determine the best possible conditions and materials for heat and energy conservation. The indoor waterfall allows for the accumulation of heat inside the hotel to be minimal by filtering cool water back up into the system as it falls through the void. In the sub-lobby, a dynamic glass wall is built from the base of the second floor down into the water. The wall acts as a curtain would, opening when the weather is cool enough and closing when it is too hot for exposure to the desert air. Portions of the outside surface are clad in panels made of a new material called GROW, which has both photovoltaic and wind harnessing capabilities.

Consultants on the project include ARUP (structural and mechanical design) and Atelier 10 (environmental and green design).

Pan Nalin, came into global limelight with his debut feature Samsara.

Nalin, a self-taught filmmaker, was born in a remote village in Gujarat, India. The richest thing his family gave to him was his spiritual upbringing. As a child, Nalin disliked schools; instead he used to paint and draw. He also actively staged mythological dramas and folk plays.

However, he only saw his first movie at age of nine - since that day he always wanted to make movies. Later, as a teenager, he left his village in pursuit of cinema. After studies in Fine Arts at the M.S. University of Baroda, Nalin went to learn Design at the prestigious NID (National Institute of Design). After shooting some four animation and twenty short silent films, Nalin concluded that the best film school is life itself.

He traveled widely all over India and finally moved to Mumbai (Bombay) where he worked as production runner. In no time the producers recognized Nalin's talent and offered him a chance to direct commercials and corporate films.

Nalin lived in USA and UK for a short period and then set out for six-month long nomadic existence in Europe. On returning to India, he roamed the Himalayas deep and wide -in search of his voice. After a long process of unlearning, he developed ideas for several feature films -and started writing.

Nalin also experimented with the short fiction film forms. He also made several documentaries with BBC, Discovery, Canal Plus and other leading international networks. His multiple award winning feature documentary Ayurveda: Art of Being was theatrically released worldwide with major success. Ayurveda celebrated a yearlong theatrical run in Spain and record-breaking three-year long run in France. The film met with similar success in USA, Canada, Germany, Holland...

His first feature film Samsara was a massive commercial and critical success worldwide and won him some thirty plus international awards. Many critics and spectators considered Samsara a groundbreaking film. Samsara grossed US$ 22 million plus (without USA, UK & Japan) till this date. Miramax/Disney has acquired Samsara for the USA.

Nalin's latest feature film Valley of Flowers was pres-sold to nearly 35 countries and is considered a major underground hit. It still continues to enjoy theatrical release with critical and commercial success worldwide. Valley of Flowers was filmed in remote, high altitude Himalayas and in Japan. Valley of Flowers won Best Picture at IFFLA Los Angles, also won four nominations at IAAC New York, including The Best Picture and The Best Director.

At present, Nalin is working on few English and Hindi language pictures, the line-up includes a film on life of Buddha, a mega action-adventure epic The First Warrior and supernatural thriller titled H2O.

5 Animals Most In Need of a Haircut

1. Angora Rabbit

Though we are deeply impressed with the Komondor’s shaggy mane, our
number one is the Angora Rabbit. This critter just seems to be nothing

Angora wool, which is removed by shearing, plucking or combing. Today,
there are many individual breeds.

2. Komondors

The Komondor is a breed of large Hungarian livestock guarding dog,
easily identified by its long, white corded coat. It was first mentioned in
a Hungarian codex in 1544 and is considered one of Hungary’s national
treasures today.

Natural dreadlocks – the Komondor:

The Komondor’s natural guarding instinct and vigilance make it the
perfect pet for rural and farm settings. The dog usually rests during the
day, keeping an eye on the surroundings, but gets active at night when it
moves around and patrols its area. It is said that Komondors will allow
intruders to enter but not to leave, keeping them down until their owners
arrive.

Contrary to what one may believe, once corded, the Komondor’s 20-27
cm long coat does not shed much. Sometimes the cords need untangling
and after a bath, Komondors take about two and a half days to dry! They
are by far the canines with the most amount of fur. The coat is the dog’s
defense mechanism as it will protect it from attackers, wolf bites for
example.

3. Bearded Pigs

The Bearded Pig (Sus barbatus) is a native of the rain- and mangrove
forests of Southeast Asia, particularly the eastern Philippines, Sumatra
and Borneo, which is why it is also known as the Bornean Bearded Pig.
As the name suggests, the pig’s most striking feature is the yellowish
beard covering its snout.

Unlike domestic pigs, Bearded Pigs are quite lean with thin legs and a
long head. The rest of their bodies are only sparsely covered by grey or
dark brown fur. Like the Emperor Tamarin, Bearded Pigs are diurnal
animals – active during the day and sleeping at night – that live in
families.

Remarkable is that these animals undertake an annual journey of several
hundred kilometers when changing seasons require them to find new
food sources. They are capable of remembering previous routes and tend
to stick to them. This is often to their disadvantage as Bearded Pigs are
hunted for food in some areas of Southeast Asia. Extensive hunting has
minimized their numbers so that their conservation status is now
considered vulnerable.

4. Emperor Tamarins

The tamarin (Sanguinas ursula) is an about-squirrel-sized New World
Monkey native to an area ranging from Costa Rica and southern Central
America to the Amazon basin and north Bolivia. There are many tamarin
species that differ considerably in colouration and appearance. Among
the moustached tamarins, the Emperor Tamarin with its long, white
moustache is probably the most striking.

It is believed that the Emperor Tamarin (Sanguinus imperator) was
named after German emperor William II who sported an equally
impressive moustache. The Emperor Tamarin prefers the tropical rain
forest as its habitat and spends most of its day in the trees, jumping
around during the day and sleeping at night.

Emperor Tamarins live together in a matriarchal structure with the oldest
female leading the group of two to eight animals, including mature males.
Various specific cries help these primates identify impostors quickly. Also
remarkable about the Emperor Tamarins is that they form mixed-species
associations with Brown-mantled Tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis).

5. Tarantulas

The Chilean Rose Tarantula (Grammostola rosea) is characterised by its
brown colour and ample pinkish or orange-red hair. The medium to large
spider is a native of South America, specifically Chile’s Atacama Desert.

Though Grammostolas usually tend to run away from danger rather
than defend themselves, they may raise their front legs and present
their fangs in preparation to fight. Their main defense mechanism are
the urticating or barbed hairs that they kick off, usually from their

irritation. This strategy is common to New World tarantulas, i.e. those
native to the Americas, which tend to be the hairiest species.

Believe it or not – the Chilean Rose Tarantula is a popular pet, especially
with tarantula enthusiasts just starting out because of its docile nature.

Have a look at the fascinating stories behind the logos of some of the most popular cars in the world.

Alfa Romeo: Surprise! Alfa Romeo, the car manufacturer and pride of Italy, traced its beginnings to France. In 1910, Milan aristocrat Cavaliere Ugo Stella collaborated with the French car company Darracq to market the line in Italy. When the partnership failed, Stella moved the company and renamed it Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company) or A.L.F.A.

Alfa Romeoâ€™s distinctive logo was created in 1910 by a draftsman named Romano Cattaneo. One day, while waiting for a tram at the Piazza Castello station in Milan, he was inspired by the red cross in the Milan Flag and the Coat of Arms of the noble House of Visconti, which featured a biscione (grass snake) with a man in its jaws, symbolizing "Viscontiâ€™s enemies that the snake [was] always ready to destroy." (Source) Two Savoia dynasty knots separated the words ALFA and MILANO.

The Romeo part came in 1916 when Neapolitan businessman Nicola Romeo bought the company and converted its factories to produce munitions and machineries for World War I. After the war, the company went back to producing cars and took on its ownerâ€™s last name to become Alfa Romeo.

Aston Martin: In 1913, Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford founded a company that later would become Aston Martin. At the time, Martin & Bamford Limited produced Singers racing cars, but the duo wanted to create a more sophisticated model of their own. They named their first car Aston Martin after the founder Lionel Martin and the Aston Clinton hill climb racing course where their Singers car had won previously.

We canâ€™t talk about Aston Martin without mentioning James Bond. In 1959, Ian Fleming put his super spy James Bond in an Aston Martin DB Mark III. When it was made into a movie in 1964, Bond drove an updated, supersleek silver Aston Martin DB5 (complete with machine gun, passenger ejector seat, and revolving number plates!)

Interestingly, Ian Fleming himself didnâ€™t drive Aston Martin. He preferred the 1963 Studebaker Avanti!

Audi: German engineer August Horch, who used to work for Karl Benz, founded his own automobile company A. Horch & Cie in 1899. A decade later, he was forced out of his own company and set up a new company in another town and continued using the Horch brand. His former partners sued him, and August Horch was forced to look for a new name.

When Horch was talking to his business partner Franz Fikentscher at Franzâ€™s apartment, Franzâ€™s son came up with the name Audi:

During this meeting Franzâ€™s son was quietly studying Latin in a corner of the room. Several times he looked like he was on the verge of saying something but would just swallow his words and continue working, until he finally blurted out, "Father - audiatur et altera parsâ€¦ wouldnâ€™t it be a good idea to call it audi instead of horch?". "Horch!" in German means "Hark!" or "listen", which is "Audi" in Latin. The idea was enthusiastically accepted by everyone attending the meeting.

And so Audiwerke GmbH was born in 1910. In 1932, four car makers Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer merged to form Auto Union. The logo of Auto Union, four interlinked rings that would later become the modern Audi logo, was used only in racing cars - the four factories continued to produce cars under their own names and emblems. Fast forward to 1985 (skipping a whole lot of history), when Auto Union ultimately became the Audi we know today.

The circular BMW logo was a representation of a spinning propeller of a Bavarian Luftwaffe.

At the time, aircrafts were painted with regional colors and the colors of the Bavarian flag were white and blue. It is said that the pilot saw the propeller as alternating segments of white and blue, hence the logo. The roundel was a nod to Karl Rappâ€™s original company.

During World War I, BMW was a major supplier of airplane engines (and later airplanes such as the Red Baron) (thanks Redditors!) to the German government. After the war, Germany was forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles to manufacture airplanes and BMW was forced to change its business: it first made railway brakes before making motorized bicycle, motorcycles and cars.

Buick: The Buick Motor Company was founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick, a Scottish-American inventor who invented the overhead valve engine. If you didnâ€™t recognize the name, youâ€™re not alone - but remember this: Buick, a high school drop out founded a company that later became the worldâ€™s largest auto company, General Motors.

At 15 years of age, Buick dropped out of school to work for a plumbing fixture manufacturer. When that business failed, Buick and his friend took it over - but within a few years, Buick had an argument with his partner because he preferred to spend his time tinkering with car engines. Buick sold his share in the company and quit.

With the money, Buick founded the Buick Motor Company and within a few years ran it to the ground. He was kicked out of the company by his partner William "Billy" Durant in 1906 and later sold his stock for a mere $100,000. Had he held on to his shares, it wouldâ€™ve been worth well over $100 million today. In his later years, Buick held low-paying jobs and couldnâ€™t even afford a telephone. He died penniless as an inspector at the Detroit School of Trades. Ironically, years later Durant himself would be forced out. General Motors, the company that Durant built, refused him pension and he died almost penniless.

Back to the logo story: Early Buick logos were variations of the cursive word "Buick." In 1930s, General Motor Styling researcher Ralph Pew found a description of the Scottish "Buik" [sic] family crest and decided to use it as a radiator grille decoration. In 1960, the logo incorporated three such shields, to represent the three Buick models then built: LeSabre, Invicta, and Electra.

In 1975, Buick changed their logo to a hawk named "Happy" with the launch of their Skyhawk line. However, in the late 1980s, as the Skyhawk car was retired, Buick went back to the tri-shield logo.

Cadillac: When Henry Ford left his second automobile company, Henry Ford Company (see below), his financial backers tried to liquidate the companyâ€™s assets. An engineer named Henry M. Leland persuaded them to continue the company instead. They listened, and so Cadillac was born.

Cadillacâ€™s first logo was based on a family crest of a minor aristocrat that the company was named after: Antoine de La Mothe, Seigneur de Cadillac (Sir of Cadillac). In 1701, de La Mothe founded Fort Pontchartrain which would later become Detroit. Cadillac was named after de La Mothe in 1902, following a bicentenary celebration of the founding of the city.

Problem was, de La Mothe was never a nobility! Born Antoine Laumet, de La Mothe was forced to leave France for America under a mysterious circumstance (some say he committed a crime or was unable to pay his debt). In the New World, he was able to assume a new identity and cobbled together a famiy crest with elements "borrowed" from, shall we say nobler sources.

In 1998, Cadillac had a new design philosophy called "art and science" and had its logo redesigned. Gone were the six birds called the merlettes, the crown, and the entire fabricated de La Mothe family crest as the company tried to shake up its stodgy image. The new logo made its debut a few years later, looking positively like it was made by Piet Mondrian!

Fiat: Fiat, then named Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Automobile Factory of Turin), was founded in 1899 by a group of investors, including Giovanni Agnelli who later became its Managing Director. Agnelli bought his shares for $400 (about $10,000 in 2007 money). Itâ€™s worth billions now, and there had been an Agnelli in Fiat management ever since. Regardless or perhaps because of its wealth, the Agnelli clan remained a fractious and complicated group of people.

Supposedly, the famous Fiat "scrabble tiles" logo of the 1960s was designed by the companyâ€™s Chief Designer who was driving past the Fiat factory during a power outage and saw an outline of the factoryâ€™s neon sign against the dark sky

Ford: Most people know that Ford was founded by (who else?) Henry Ford. What most people didnâ€™t know was that this was his third automobile company. Ford experimented with cars while working for Thomas Edison, and left to found his first auto company, The Detroit Automobile Company, which went bankrupt in just 2 years. He then built a race car and founded Henry Ford Company. Ford left that one after just one year (the company later became Cadillac - see above).

In 1902, Ford went on to create his third automobile company, the Ford & Malcomson, Ltd., and almost lost that one when sales were slow. He was unable to pay his bills to John and Horace Dodge, who supplied parts. Fordâ€™s partner brought in a group of investors and even convinced the Dodge Brothers to accept shares in the company, which was renamed Ford Motor Company. Later, the Dodge Brothers went on to form their own car company (can you guess what?)

In 1909, Childe Harold Wills, Fordâ€™s first chief engineer and designer (who also help to design the Model T), lend a script font that he created to make his own business card, to create the Ford logo. The famous blue oval was added later for the 1927 Model A - it remained in use until today.

Mazda: Mazda began its life in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. in Hiroshima, Japan. At the time, there was a cork shortage because of World War I, so the company was founded to process a cork substitute made from the bark of an Abemaki or Chinese cork oak tree. It was a good idea at the time, but shortly afterwards Japan could get real cork again and the company foundered.

In 1927, Jujiro Matsuda came onboard and the company began manufacturing tools, three-wheeled "trucks" and then cars. After World War II, the company formally adopted the name Mazda, which depending on who you ask, stood for the Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda or an anglicized pronunciation of Matsuda the founderâ€™s name (or both).

In the 1936 logo, the M shaped curve was inspired by the emblem of Hiroshima city. The 1991 and 1992 logos symbolized a wing, the Sun and a circle of light. Mazdaâ€™s current logo, nicknamed the "owl" logo, was designed by Rei Yoshimara in 1997. The stylized "M" was meant to look like stretched wings, but many people saw a stylized tulip instead.

Mercedes-Benz: The modern Mercedes-Benz traced its lineage to a 1926 merger of two car companies, Daimler-Motored-Gesellschaft or DMG, founded by Gottlieb Daimler (along with Wilhelm Maybach), and Benz & Cie, founded by Karl Benz. Both Daimler and Benz worked independently to invent internal combustion-powered automobiles. Their factories were actually just 60 miles apart, yet they didnâ€™t know of each otherâ€™s early work.

After World War I, the German economy was in tatters, and to survive, the two companies formed a syndicate in 1924, where they would continue to sell their separate brands but would standardize design, share purchasing and advertising. In 1926, however, the two companies merged into Daimler-Benz.

The name "Mercedes" came about in 1900. A wealthy European businessman and racing enthusiast named Emil Jellinek began selling Daimlerâ€™s cars. He wanted a faster car, and specified a new engine to be designed by Maybach and to be named after his 10-year-old daughterâ€™s nickname, MercÃ©dÃ¨s or Spanish for "grace." "Mercy" (See below)

Jellinek was quite a character. He used to pepper DMGâ€™s engineers with colorful suggestions and criticism such as "Your manure wagon has just broken down on schedule" and "You are all donkeys". However, as he actually sold a lot of cars, he was tolerated and even listened to. Later, Jellinek would add Mercedes to his own and became Emil Jellinek-Mercedes. The star in Daimlerâ€™s logo came from an old postcard where Gottlieb Daimler had drawn a star above the picture of his house and wrote that "this star would one day shine over [his] own factory to symbolize prosperity." The three-pointed star symbolized Daimlerâ€™s ambition of making vehicles "on land, on water and in the air." (Source: Daimler)

After the merger, a new logo was designed. It combined the symbols of the two companies: the three-pointed star of DMG and the laurel wreath of Benz.

Mitsubishi: In 1854 feudal Japan, a man named Yataro Iwasaki, son of a provincial farmer whose grandfather sold the familyâ€™s samurai status to settle some debt, began his career on the wrong foot: he was called home from school at the age of 19 when his father was injured in a dispute with the village leader. Iwasaki asked a local magistrate to hear his case, and when refused, accused the man of corruption. Iwasaki was promptly jailed for seven months.

Fast forward to 1868: Iwasaki was working for the Tosa clan when the Meiji Restoration abolished Japanâ€™s feudal clan system. He acquired Tsukumo Shokai, the Tosa clanâ€™s shipping business and renamed it Mitsubishi in 1873.

It was a fourth-generation Iwasaki, a man named Kayota Iwasaki, who turned Mitsubishi into a giant corporate group that included an automobile manufacturing company, Mitsubishi Motors.

The name Mitsubishi was a combination of the words "mitsu" (three) and "hishi" (water chestnut, used in Japan to mean a rhombus or a diamond shape). The official translation of the name was "three diamonds."

The Mitsubishi logo was a combination of the Iwasaki family crest, three stacked diamonds, and the three-leaf crest of the Tosa Clan.

Peugeot: Peugeot got its start in 1812 in Montbeliard, France, when two brothers, Jean-Pierre and Jean-FrÃ©dÃ©ric Peugeot converted their windmill into a steel mill. Their first products were rolled steel for saw blades and clock springs, as well as cylindrical steel rods. For decades, the Peugeot family business made metal goods, machine tools, crinoline dresses, umbrellas, wire wheels, irons, sewing machines, kitchen gadgets and by 1885, bicycles.

Indeed, Peugeotâ€™s entry into the automobile business was by way of bicycles. At the time, the company was one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in France. In 1889, Armand Peugeot created the companyâ€™s first steam-powered car. A year later, he abandoned steam in favor of gas-powered internal combustion engine after meeting Gottlieb Daimler.

The Peugeot "lion" logo was designed by jeweler and engraver Justin Blazer in 1847. It was based on the flag of the RÃ©gion Franche-ComtÃ©. The logo was stamped on Peugeot kitchen gadgets to denote the quality of their steel. It took Armand 14 years to convince his family that cars could be a moneymaker. Now, you may not drive a Peugeot car, but I bet youâ€™ve used a Peugeot invention of 1842: the peppermill. The millâ€™smechanism was so reliable that it remained virtually unchanged until today.

Renault: Louis Renault was 21 when he made his first car in the backyard of his parentâ€™s home. He soon got orders for cars, so in 1898, along with his brothers and friends, Louis opened the company SociÃ©tÃ© Renault FrÃ¨res in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.

The first Renault logo, drawn in 1900 featured the three initials of the Renault brothers: Louis, Ferdinand and Marcel. In 1906, the logo changed to a front end of a car enclosed in a gear wheel.

During World War I, Renault manufactured light tanks for the Allies called the Renault FT-17. This was so popular that after the war, Renault actually changed its logo into a tank. The diamond shape was introduced in 1925 and remained until today. The modern Renault logo was created in 1972 by Victor Vasarely.

Saab: If youâ€™ve ever seen a Saab car commercial, then youâ€™d know that the company was "born from jets". You wouldnâ€™t know it from the carâ€™s staid style, but historically this was accurate: In 1937, an aircraft company called Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget ("Swedish Aeroplane Limited" or simply SAAB) was created to meet the needs of the Swedish Air Force.

When World War II ended, SAAB the airplane company started making cars to diversify its business. The first car it made was a prototype called the the Saab 92001 or ursaab (meaning "original Saab") in 1946. It was test-driven for nearly 330,000 miles (530,000 km) in utter secrecy, usually on narrow and muddy forest roads in the early mornings or late nights.

In 1947, the Saab Automobile company was incorporated. The companyâ€™s first car was the Saab 92, named because it was simply the companyâ€™s 92nd design project (the previous 91 had all been aircraft).

The griffen logo, featuring the head of a mythological beast that had a body of a lion and head and wings of an eagle, came from Vadis-Scania, a truck manufacturer that merged with SAAB (airplane) company. The griffen was a coat of arms of the province Scania.

In 2000, Saab Automobile company was bought out by General Motors, and thus no longer had any connection with SAAB outside of its history and logo similarities.

Volkswagen: You wouldnâ€™t know it from the companyâ€™s website but Volkswagen (German for "Peopleâ€™s Car") can trace its history straight to the villain of World War II: Adolf Hitler.

Hereâ€™s the short version of the story: After World War I, Germanyâ€™s economy was shot and cars cost more than most people can afford. When Hitler rose to power and became Chancellor, he spoke at the 1933 Berlin Auto Show of his idea to create a new and affordable car.

At the same time, Ferdinand Porsche (yes, that Porsche) was designing an odd-looking yet inexpensive car (which would later become the Volkswagen Beetle). Porsche met with Hitler in 1934, who asked that the car to have the following specifications: it should have a top speed of 100 km/h (62 mph), a fuel consumption of 42 mpg, and could carry 2 adults and 3 children. He said the car should look like a Maikaefer - a May beetle and even gave Porsche a sketch of the basic design. Porsche promised to deliver the design, with prototype cars to be built by Daimler-Benz.

In 1937, the Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH was created (it became simply Volkswagenwerk GmbH a year later). In 1938, Hitler opened the state-funded Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, which was to produce the KdF-wagen (kraft durch freude, meaning "strength through joy"). Few were actually built, instead, the factory (employing forced labor) churned out military car, based on the same chassis: the KÃ¼belwagen, Schwimmwagen, and Kommandeurwagen.

It was later found out that Hitler had this in mind all along. He added an extra secret specification to Porscheâ€™s design: the car was to be able to carry 3 men, a machine gun, and ammunition.

After Germany was defeated in World War II, the British took over the Volkswagen factory and the KdF-Wagen was renamed the Beetle. The British then sought to give control of the company - first they asked the Ford Motor Company, then the French Government, other British car manufacturers and lastly, Fiat. All turned down this "free offer" because they thought the Beetleâ€™s design was inferior and that the company would be a money drain. (Source: The Auto Channel)

So, the British gave the Volkswagen company back to the German government in a trust. Later, having sold more than 21 million cars, the Volkswagen Beetle would become one of the worldâ€™s best selling cars ever.

The VW logo itself was supposedly designed by Franz Xavier Reimspiess, an employee of Porsche, during an office logo design competition. He was given a one time payment of 100 Reichsmarks (about $400).

It’s fascinating, sad, and ironic that some of the most creatively talented and successful people in history can be a complete train wreck when it comes to their personal lives. Frank Lloyd Wright is a perfect example unfortunately.

Frank Lloyd Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as “the greatest American architect of all time”. Wright was an innovative, influential and controlling artist (he would design the furnishings for his spaces, dictate their precise placement, and even choose the artwork) and will forever be remembered, respected, and honored for his legacy of work. But how Wright chose to live his personal life probably wouldn’t win any awards, and was also sadly marked by recurring tragedy.

When Wright was just starting out, his integrity was called into question when it was discovered that he was designing houses “behind the back” of the architectural firm he worked for– Wright was promptly asked to leave. He had no trouble finding work, and the evidence is well documented by the now famous homes (Wright referred to them as his “bootleg” designs) located all around the Oak Park, Chicago area. He set about quickly assembling a team of young draftsmen that would worship and emulate their master in work, and even personal presentation.

With all the success and accolades that soon followed came a bloated ego and selfish appetite. Wright thought very highly of himself, and felt that others should too. He went after whatever he desired– it’s told that the famed architect had long struggled to keep his pencil in his pants.

Falling Water, also known as the Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. (of Kaufmann’s dept. stores) Residence, was designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 in rural southwestern Pennsylvania. The house was built partly over a waterfall in Bear Run at Rural Route 1 in Mill Run, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, in the Laurel Highlands of the Allegheny Mountains.

Frank Lloyd Wright's "Taliesin West"

Taliesin West (not to be confused with Taliesin) was architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and school in the desert from 1937 until his death in 1959 at the age of 91. Today, it houses The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, a school for architects, and is open to the public for tours– located on Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s decorative modern Ennis House with its distinctive Bismuth crystal like blocks is the background for the interior of Deckard’s apartment in the film Blade Runner. Elsewhere in the film, famous modern buildings such as Chicago’s Hancock Tower are the influence for sets.

The Serbian mafia operates in more than ten nations including Germany, United States, United Kingdom, France, etc. They are involved in diverse activities like drug trafficking, smuggling, contract killing, protection rackets, gambling and gen thefts. It has three major groups called Vozdovac, Surcin and Zemun which control the smaller groups. Presently there are about 30-40 groups working in Serbia.

7. Israeli Mafia

Israeli Mafia works in a lot of countries in activities like narcotics, drug trafficking and prostitution. Times have changed as the Israeli mafia was once looked at with awe and known for its patronage but today they are ruthless and don’t think twice about killing by standers. The Russian-Israeli Mafia has permeated the US political system so well that the US forces are failing to make any significant progress in stopping them.

6. Mexican Mafia

Mexican Mafia is a very strong prison gang in the United States. It was started in the late 1950s to protect prisoners against other inmates and from the officers. This gang has also been involved in extortion and drug trafficking. It has about 30,000 members all over the United States. The gang members sometimes sport a tattoo with a common design which is a Mexican national symbol over a flaming circle and crossed knives. It is said that there are 150 prison members who have the authority to command murder and 2000 associates who will execute these commands. They force gangs and dealers to pay a protection tax and the ones who refuse will be killed.

5. Japanese Yakuza

Japanese Yakuza is a native organized crime group which uses threat and extortion to get their way. Its origin is found to be in the 17^th century. A missing joint of the little finger is a tell tale sign of the gang members. This is often offered to the leader as an act of appeasement or apology. Some of the members even have full body tattoos. It has 110,000 active members in this group who are from 2500 families. They are involved in protection rackets, importing uncensored pornography from Europe and America, prostitution and in illegal immigration.

4. Chinese Triads

Chinese Triads consists of many criminal organizations which are based in Mainland China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, etc. They are also very active in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver as well as San Francisco. Their organized crime involves theft, contract killing, drug trafficking, extortion, piracy, etc. It is now involved in piracy as well. They started in the 18^th century but were called Tian Di Hui then. Even though it is steadily increasing in power, the activities have been low key. The triads can have 50 to over 30,000 members. They are also involved in counterfeiting Chinese currency.

3. Colombian Drug Cartels

Colombian Drug Cartels were formed mainly for controlling and trafficking drugs. They operate in a lot of countries. They have many organizations that deal with political, military and legal aspects of the cartels. The important cartels from Columbia are the Cali Cartel, Medellin Cartel and the Norte del Valle Cartel. At one point these cartels were threatened by the extradition treaty between the US and Columbia. The lords went into hiding and ordered its members to kill its supporters. They have also been involved in a lot of kidnappings and terrorism

2. Sicilian and American Cosa Nostra

Sicilian and American Cosa Nostra is a relatively new group. It was started in the second half of the nineteenth century in Italy. In spite of it being a young mafia, it has a great ability to plan large crimes and get away with it. It is involved in protection rackets, drug and arms trafficking, mediation of criminal business are some of the things the Sicilian and American Cosa Nostra are involved in. It has a small number of members ranging from 3500 to 4000. In addition to these members they have associates who aren’t true members. A member will have to undergo the initiation ceremony where he will probably have to murder somebody to prove his worth. Every member will have to follow the code of silence.

Russian Mafia originated in the Soviet Union and now has influence all over the world. It has between 100,000 to 500,000 members. They are involved in organized crimes in countries like Israel, Hungary, Spain, Canada, UK, US, Russia, etc. They have also immigrated to Israel, America and Germany by using Jewish and German identities. Their activities include drug and firearm trafficking, bombings, smuggling, pornography, internet fraud, etc. One of their rules is to never co-operate with the authorities. Chand Baori is a famous stepwell situated in the village Abhaneri near Jaipur in Indian state of Rajasthan. This step well is located opposite Harshat Mata Temple and is one of the deepest and largest step wells in India. It was built in 9th century and has 3500 narrow steps and 13 stories and is 100 feet deep.

The Chand Baori, an amazing vast well with flights of steps on three sides was built in the 10th century in Abhaneri, near Jaipur in Indian state of Rajasthan. This impressive step well is as deep as a seven storeyed building. The famous Harshat Mata temple situated opposite to this well shows that there must have been a religious connection with the step-well. The well is 35 m on each side with steps leading down from each side and water could be drawn from any level.

If you are wondering why it is called baori than answer for is that in hindi baori means well. Legends say that ghosts build it in one night and that it has so many steps to make it impossible for someone to retrieve a coin once it’s been dropped in the well.

Punalu'u Beach is the most visited of the few black

by the name of Pele.

Papakolea Beach

One of only 2 green sand beaches in the world, the

by travelling to Hawaii 's Ka'u district. Again, the unique colour
of its sand can be attributed to volcanic activity - specifically,
the green hue belongs to the abundance of olivine crystals which
have been produced as a result of a nearby cinder cone erupting

Andres Amador works with one of the biggest canvases available, with entire lengths of beaches swallowed up by his art.
Sadly the sea is no discerning art critic, for once the San Francisco artist finishes his staggering artwork, the waves come in to wipe the slate clean.

Many of his stunning images, which start out as simple squiggles in the 39-year-old's notebook, span an incredible 500x300feet and are raked into the grains in a race against the tide.

Using a canvas crafted by the elements the patient American waits for a full or new moon to make sure low tides offer him plenty of space to muster the incredible patterns.

And just a few hours after etching his grand designs the curves and contours will be washed away - leaving the beach surface looking as if nothing had ever happened.

To make sure he has everything he needs before the mammoth artwork begins, Andres, from San Francisco, California, crafts the image over and over on a computer using the hand-drawn original from his sketch book.
